Claim filed by Edy R. Evans, mother, care J. E. Welborn, attorney,
Ellisville, Jones County, Mississippi November 3, 1863.
1860 Jones County, Mississippi, Census shows a William Evans, 25, an overseer in his employer's household; also a Smitty B. Grimes, 17, b in Alabama, also in Ellisville, in the household of Robert and Nancy W. Hopkins.
1850 Dale County, Alabama, Census lists Stephen Grimes 60, b NC, Bethany Grimes 48, b NC, Winney 16, Charlotte 14, Joseph W. 11, Sarah E. 8, Smithy 6, Daniel C. J. Grimes 10, Ann C. 18. Bethany and Daniel both have surname Grimes recorded, rather than the usual ditto marks. The out of chronological order of the children suggests that Daniel and Ann may not be Stephen's children. It is also possible that Bethany is not Stephen's wife.
1860 Dale County, Alabama, Census shows Joseph W. Grimes as head of household, Annie S.? Grimes (surname recorded) 24, Charlotte 22, Sarah E. 15, William A. 1.
