A planter/trader in Surry County and Isle of Wight County, he sailed from the Port of London in September, 1656 aboard the Increase, arrived James River, Virginia, in November, whereupon he settled on his father's land.
During the stormy voyage from England to Virginia, much of the cargo was damaged. John and Jacob Flower were witnesses for the owner of the damaged cargo in a suit brought to recover the damage from the Captain of the ship, William Cooper. Another witness was Thomas Underwood, age 27,  and his personal servant, Richard Weyfield, age 19. Thomas Underwood was returning to Virginia from a trip to London. Thomas Underwood's granddaughter, Jane Underwood, later married Jacob's son, Henry.
