Governess to the child Mary Queen of Scots, she accompanied her to France in 1548 for her
betrothal to the Dauphin. In the train were "four Marys": her daughter,
Mary Fleming, and three other girls of the same age all named Mary. At the French court,
Lady Janet caught the eye of King Henry II, which aroused the wrath of his mistress, Diane
de Poitiers. Lady Janet was sent back to Scotland, but the "four Marys"
remained attached to the Queen all her life.
