*Although some dispute the lineage, the relationship of Gundred to Queen Matilda is attested by a charter of William de Warrenne to Lewes priory, in which he states that his donations were for Queen Matilda, the mother of his wife. It is conjectured that Gundred, and Gherbold the Fleming, Earl of Chester (her brother) were the children of Queen Matilda by a former marriage, probably clandestine.
