He was lover to King Edward II's wife, Queen Isabella,
and was the leader in deposing the king and executing the Despencers. His career was not
however of long continuance, for King Edward III had him seized in the castle of
Nottingham, and conveyed prisoner to London, where, being impeached before parliament, he
was convicted under various charges, the first of which was privity to the murder of King
Edward II in Berkeley Castle. Executed in 1330 at Elms, near Smithfield.
