Although not yet of age, he was one of the chief commanders at the Battle of the Standard, 1138, near Northallerton, adhering to King Stephen. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Lincoln.
In 1148 he accompanied King Louis of France on Crusade.
He made a second journey on Crusade in 1186, and was taken prisoner, but was redeemed by the Knights Templar.
