Emily may be related to the family of Moses Ezekial Mathis (Matthews), Jr., who was b 12 March 1773 in Sampson Co., North Carolina, and d 9 March 1868 in Dale County. He was the son of Moses Matthis (Matthews), Sr. (b 1747 in Sampson Co., North Carolina) and Martha Halferd (b 1751 in Sampson Co.). He married Rhoda Truett in Darlington Co., South Carolina, and they had a daughter Emily b in 1796. Emily Mathis Crumpler may have been a niece of Moses.  Moses Matthews lived near Griffin Crumpler. The 1880 Census indicates that Emily's parents were born in North Carolina.
