As Earl of Surrey, Howard joined his father in supporting Richard III. He was
captured at Bosworth and deprived of his titles and honors. However, when Henry VII
was in need of a good general, he make Howard his lieutenant in the north. He continued to
advance in royal favor under Henry VIII. While Henry was in France, King James of
Scotland invaded. Howard defended with a smaller force, and the English army won the
decisive victory of Flodden. In reward, the king restored Howard as Duke of Norfolk
and Earl Marshal of England.
