Although many family histories claim that William Dismukes was a French Huguenot originally called Guillaume des Meaux, no record of a name change, or of his existence as des Meaux, has been found. The story originally appeared in a genealogy prepared in 1919, and was accepted by the Huguenot Society of America. I consider the Huguenot origin possible, but unproven.
