P. D. Costello came to America with his mother. He served in the Mexican War, and came to Alabama when the war ended. At the age of 19, he was appointed Probate Judge of Conecuh County, where he served until 1850. He moved to Geneva, then to Elba, becoming Probate Judge of Coffee County. In 1861 he organized Co. K, 25th Alabama Infantry, CSA and was commissioned a captain. He fought at Corinth, Shiloh, and Perryville. He was promoted to major and was acting lieutenant-colonel when he was fatally wounded at Murfreesboro in 1863.
He had married in 1855 Cordelia Ann Lee, daughter of Col. Charles Stephens Lee. The Costellos and several of their children are buried in the plot (right) at Shiloh Cemetery.
