1  William Jackson Smith, b 1780 near Spartanburg, South Carolina, d aft 1870 in Tallapoosa County, Ala.
m Elizabeth (Betsy) Ann Smith (according to James Russell Smith, she was William's first cousin),
possibly the daughter of Henry Smith and Rebecca Colley, 1 June 1802 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
2  William Jackson Smith, Jr., according to James Russell Smith, he was called Jackson and was a good fiddler.

b abt 1802, m Elizabeth
There is a William J. Smith, age 74, on the 1880 Census in Ripville, Chambers County, head of household with
two children living with him, Sarah, 34, and Rufus, 23. He gives his and his parents' birthplace as South Carolina.
James Russell Smith listed Alfred and James Ellis as the children of William Jackson, Jr.

        3 Alfred Smith
        3 James Ellis Smith

2  Stephen Smith, b 03 April 1803 in South Carolina, d 12 April 1873 in Clay County, Alabama
         m Nancy Whatley, b 11 October 1811 in Georgia, d 12 February 1902 in Lineville,
Clay County, Alabama, possibly the daughter of John H. Whatley and Polly Blanks
Names and birthdates of children are from the Stephen Smith family Bible, at one time in the
         possession of Bessie Hardegree.

        3  Levi A. Smith, b 9 October 1827, probably d bef 1940
             Stephen Smith is listed on the 1840 Census with 4 children (Miles, 12, Elizabeth, 8, Martha 6, and James 3);
Levi must have died in childhood.

Miles L. Smith, b 17 October 1828 in Georgia, d 16 January 1905 in Coopers, Chilton County, Alabama
            m Martha Emeline Brassell, b 12 January 1840 in Georgia, d 3 January 1915. They married
22 March 1855 in Talladega County. She was the daughter of William Brassell and Elizabeth Whatley.
            1860 Talladega County Census (Court Hill P. O.): M. L. Smith, 21, Martha 20, Robert 4, James 7/12, also
in the household is C. C. Smith, 24, laborer, whom I believe to be Christopher Smith, son of Parmalee Smith.
Miles is living near Stephen and Nancy. C. C. Smith served in the same company in the Confederate Army
as Miles' brothers James and Hiram John.
1870 Coosa County, Census (Travelers Rest): Miles
Smith 40, Martha 30, John 15, Levi 13, Rufus 9, Allice 6.
            1880 Coosa County, Census (Travelers Rest): Miles L. Smith, 51, Martha E., James W., 20, Allison C., 18 (son)
1900 Chilton County, Census (Cooper): Miles Smith, 71, Martha, 60, Elizabeth Braswell (mother-in-law), 82.
I can't account for John and Levi being in Miles' household in 1870 but not in 1860. Rufus appears in 1870,
but not 1880, when he would have been abt 19. It's possible that John, Levi and Rufus are the children of
Christopher Smith, who may have died in the War Between the States.

3  Elizabeth "Betsy" Ann Smith, b 24 January 1832 in Georgia
            m George Lewis Arnold,  12 September 1858, in Ashland, Clay County, Alabama (b 18 August 1837, d 15 July 1863 near
Vicksburg, Mississippi - Co E, 31st Alabama Infantry Regt.) He was the son of Elizabeth J. Hobbs (b 7 December 1809) and James
            Arnold.
Elizabeth and two children (K. and George) are in her father's household in 1870; Elizabeth and George are living with her
            mother Nancy in 1880.

    2  Russell Wilson Smith, b 1809 in South Carolina, d 1866?
m Ursula Scott abt 1826 in Troup County, Georgia (d in Robertson County, Texas)
He was a furniture maker. According to a family story, he was on his way home from Salem, Alabama, when he stopped
at a house during a storm, and was mistaken for a Northern soldier and shot. However, Ursula appears as head of
household in the 1860 Census. I cannot account for this discrepancy.
Russell W. Smith appears on the 1830 Henry County, Georgia Census, with 1 male and 1 female 15-20, and 1 male and 1
female 20-30. Nearby is Milton Smith (relationship unknown) with 1-0-0-0-1, 2-1-0-0-1. Tailor Whatley is also nearby
with 1 male 20-30 and 1 female 60-70.  This is presumably Taylor Whatley, brother of Martin Whatley who married
Sophia Smith. 1850 Tallapoosa Census shows Russell W. Smith age 41, b SC, with Ursula and all the children down
through John T. except Elizabeth, who had married by then. His occupation appears to be Mercer (cloth merchant).

4 Marcus Monroe Duffey, b 20 August 1848 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, d 8 November 1929 in Marysville, Cooke County, Texas
Marcus served as a Texas Ranger. Pension application paper states: "... records of this office show that M. M. Duffey
was mustered into the service of Co C, Frontier Men of Clay County, Texas, at Montague, Texas, May 20, 1874, for a
period of 12 months. This organization was commanded by Capt. E. F. Ikard, and was organized for the purpose of
protecting the Texas Frontier against Indian depredations." (signed Robt. L. Robertson, Adjutant General, State of Texas).
He served as Justice of the Peace in Marysville for several years after he left the Rangers. He served two terms in the Texas

Legislature. He introduced the bill which designated Lubbock, Texas to be the site for Texas Tech University.
