15th Alabama Infantry Regiment, CSA

The 15th Alabama Infantry organized at Ft. Mitchell Alabama in August 1861, and had over 900 men in 11 Companies from Barbour, Dale, Henry, Macon, Pike, and Russell counties. Their first orders sent them to fight at Winchester, and then to Manassas where they brigaded with the 21st Georgia, 21st N. Carolina and the 16th Mississippi.

The 15th was placed in the main Army and served under Maj. Gen. Stonewall Jackson, and fought in the Valley Campaign. The 15th moved to Richmond under Jackson and fought on Jackson's flank against Union General McClellen. The 15th was moved under the command of Brig. Gen. Trimble and was brigaded with the 4th Alabama, the 44th Alabama, the 47th Alabama, and the 48th Alabama, forming the Alabama Brigade.

The 15th fought in many bloody battles and was assigned to Hood's Brigade at Gettysburg, where Company B made the charge up the Little Round Top and into history, losing a large number of men in just a few minutes. The 15th Alabama Co B fought in 48 major battles and numerous skirmishes including the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Hanover Court House and the 2nd Battle of Cold Harbor, the defense of Petersburg and Saylor's Creek. The 15th Alabama fought until the surrender, and was at Appomatox Court House for that surrender. Of the some 1600 men who served the 15th, 260 fell in Battle, 440 died while in service, and some 231 were discharged or transferred.
